oil pressure
Is 60 lbs oil pressure a little hi at 2000 rpm? Just got it running with new oil pump and mech. gauge. The engine sat for a number of years with heads off and oil pump froze up but it dont smoke and sounds strong. When I shut it down, it has a small residual smoke coming from oil intake breather, but other than that it seems like a good one.
Thanks |

Re: oil pressure
I was using a hand held temp sensor and it got to about 180 degrees. I have a 10/ 30 oil in it. I was amazed it run so good. Ambient temp around 80 degrees. The oil pump was froze up solid when I started and so was the crank. I just kept putting oil in cylinders and cranking over by hand as best I could, cw and ccw untill it rolled over. But when it did start, no oil spouting from sender fitting so I pulled engine and put in a new oil pump and replaced the gear on cam shaft.
this thing sounds sweet and it has not been tuned up for god only knows how long. The heads were in the trunk when I brought it home. Thanks for the help tom |

Re: oil pressure
My only concern would be that whatever was in the oil pump got shoved down the oiling passageways, blocking their flow and not allowing oil to the front of the engine. If it's a 49+ flathead, I know the rear main and cam are fed from the pump but the center and front cam and crank bearings, and rods are fed from the tube that goes thru the lifter valley.
It would be reasonable to assume that if that passage was blocked, the center and front bearings are not getting oiled and that would contribute to a higher than normal oil pressure since the oil isn't "going out" the front part of the engine. If this is the case and the passages are blocked, I imagine high oil pressure won't be a problem for very long... |

Re: oil pressure
All food for thought. I have run the engine about 2 hours total. I did inspect all the bearings and retorque, returns were all clear. I put 10/30 oil in it.
Thanks |

So, if you're nervous, pull the front main cap... Sometimes easier said than done. Or if the engine seems clean inside, be happy you have a tight engine. Karl |

Re: oil pressure
Thanks Karl, it seems to appear as a tight engine so far. I checked the bearings pryer to reinstalling. I think I might try a light oil and see what that does. very clean inside.

Re: oil pressure
I put mine together on tighter side of the clearance and run 60 psi at 2000 rpm warm and 25 at idle. 4K miles on engine no problems yet.

Re: oil pressure
Mine has been running 60 psi at 2000 and 25 at idle for 25 years. No problem. Believe the factory manual says 57 psi @ 40 mph. You are good to go.

Re: oil pressure
My 39 runs 45 to 50 LBS at 50 and idles at 15 to 20 with 20/50 Castol oil since new engine 33 years ago. It now has 120,000 miles oil pressure remains the same is quiet and burns no oil. I don't believe in low oil pressure if one of my cars has low pressure I fix it. Usually pressure spring in the front, pressure spring in later pumps or the pump itself. I wouldn't put ANY pump in an engine with out testing if first. G.M.

Re: oil pressure
I put a mechanical gauge on it. I have the entire car apart, no dash etc
GM, I did not test it prior to installing. I just bought it new and put it together. Thanks jake and GM |
