Default Strange head

The water openings are much longer on the head in question. No markings on the head except the dimples on the water pump flange. Also no water opening between 2 & 3.

Any ideas ?? Gary in MN

I think it is an early head as the center waterjacket hole is not punched out. I believe that started in 1929.

Where did you get this head? Hi-compression maybe?

The head does not appear to be high comp. The head was in the pile of parts for a 1931 pickup project. Gary

Are actually date codes on heads Ford made after Model A production ceased., too bad that they're rusted so bad.

Does it have a 1/8" thick raised round boss for the distributor set screw?

Not quite right, the early heads had a center hole, it was just smaller.

Tbh, I wouldn't recommend using this head for anything since the center cooling hole seems to be missing entirely, which will compromise the ability to cool the head.

The block you pictured has the cooling hole, but the heads were solid in that area, until late 29 as I recall. All my books were lost in the fire, so I can't give an exact date.

The blocks had a hole there but the heads didn't?

I suspect that the absence of the water passage between Cylinders 2 & 3 improves the coolant flow around Cylinders 3 & 4. That is, the water pumps intake suction becomes greater at the back end of the head.

The hole in the block may have been to facilitate removing sand after the block was cast, not for cooling.
