T5 transmission question.
Is the T5 transmission that some use behind a flathead the GM one or do they also use a Mustang 5 speed? Just wondering what is in a pile of parts that I got. Guy was building an 8BA and has some sort of an aluminum Speedway adapter on back of what looks like stock bellhousing and I don't think the transmission with it is a Ford 5 speed. Thanks for any info. The '39 transmission is fine with me.

Re: T5 transmission question.
If memory serves me correctly all of the aluminum adaptors from Speedway are for the GM T5. Usually they are the S-10 variety. Is the shifter located near the rear of the tailshaft or closer to the main body of the transmission? This does not always mean it is an S-10 trans but it is at least an S-10 tailhousing.

Re: T5 transmission question.
My kit uses the GM 85/92 or 93 up S-10 trans. Includes bell housing, machined throw-out brg assembly, pilot bushing, lower shaft, lever if needed, return spring, and bolts. Used your stock flywheel and starter. See my ad in the swap meet ads. Cornhusker Rod And Custom

Re: T5 transmission question.
Don't think the shifter location is going to help much in IDing a transmission and they are easily interchanged. The most common T5 used is the S10. You can tell the difference by the bolt pattern of the transmission to the bellhousing. One is referred to as the GM pattern and the other one as the Ford pattern (although it is also used on later GM T5s). Most of the bell type adapters on the market are for the GM style bolt pattern. If using a Ford bolt pattern it is common to use a "hogshead" (a stock Ford bellhouse part used in trucks) and a flat adapter plate.

Re: T5 transmission question.
Here is a picture of the bellhousing and the aluminum adapter that I think is for the T5 transmission.the bellhousing itself is stamped steel.

Re: T5 transmission question.
That is a flat adapter plate on a stock stamped steel bellhousing. It looks like it is for a T5 with the GM style bolt pattern.

Re: T5 transmission question.
JFYI, the starter plate shown is wrong for that ('49-'51 Ford) stamped steel bell housing, a common mistake. A '49-'51 angled plate is needed to match the lower bell housing angle.

Re: T5 transmission question.
Thank you for that info. I have a 59AB in my '37 and have not had a later engine since an 8RT in a '53 pickup and that was 35 years ago. I am not going to use any of this I like my'39 transmission not a GM one.

Re: T5 transmission question.
The S-10 was popular in the beginning but the 4:1 first gear and weak bearings, makes it marginal, In 87 most T-5's were WC models with better bearings and ratios, Fr the 8BA style the Ford pattern is the least expensive way to go. Stock bell housing, Clutch, throw out bearing. Just a spacer plate and the right disk.

Re: T5 transmission question.
I have a 1993 WC in my coupe and I think it's great! The only thing you have to deal with is the electronic speedo. You can change the tailshaft or go with a cable X box so your speedo works. I went with the cable X box and all is well!
