Can the solenoid be bypassed to put a Manual switch to activate the the solenoid for the overdrive and do away with the governor and lock out switch on my 1946 Lincoln V12. I keep having problems with the original set up and can't figure it out. It works intermittently and can't be trusted. Will this cause any harm?

It will cause no harm. I have set up five or six overdrives this way. I have been operating the overdrive in my 53 sedan using a push on / push off button for over ten years. I gutted the back of my lighter and use the push in feature of the lighter to turn on and off current to the overdrive solenoid. It is less "automatic" than the original design, but I like choosing when things happen.

If you use a toggle switch make sure it is a heavy one, about 30 amps rated. The solenoid pulls lots of amps on kick-in.
