Engine crank problem Question for the experts
A friend of mine has an engine with inserts, balanced crank, lightened flywheel and V8 clutch
When it was running this week there was a clicking noise. We checked it out today and found out that the crank is moving back and forth about a 1/4 inch when you step on the clutch. There is no oil leak. What could be the problem? |

Re: Engine crank problem Question for the experts
Sounds like the thrust surface is gone on the rear main, But make sure it is not just a loose pulley moving. Rod

Re: Engine crank problem Question for the experts
Having recently puit inserts in my A I would say the thrust washers have come out or not been put in,Have a look on Snyders parts page under crankshaft and there is an instruction how they are fitted.Lawrie

Re: Engine crank problem Question for the experts
Time to pull the pan and have a look. The thrust washers are missing or worn away, or possibly were not installed right to begin with. Rod

Re: Engine crank problem Question for the experts
Rod is correct. I have seen several enginesthat were built with inserts and only a half thrust in the front and rear that very soon wear out the rear thrust and have to have it replaced. If this is the case, your friend will have to remove the engine and have the block modified for a full circle thrust. Not an overly complex job but, it cannot be done in the car.

Re: Engine crank problem Question for the experts
the various engine builders use different thrusts. There are some pretty flimsy cobbled together set ups out there. My engine has the thick bronze ones made by Antique Engine Rebuilding. I like the stout composition and they have been in there for 20K and are fine. I think you need to get in there and look at it. Let us know what yours are like so we can learn.

Re: Engine crank problem Question for the experts
Recently I saw an inserted engine by one of the major rebuilders that had the thrusts at the CENTER main only AND "half circle" i.e. only on the block, not on the main cap. I wonder how long they will last.
