Throw out bearing
I have a question, what kind of noise would a person expect to hear in the clutch area if there was a failure or one about to take place ? When I bought this car three years ago it had a funny little tinkly sound going down the road in the clutch/transmission area but shifts fine and goes very well. The thought of pulling back the rear end and changing the throwout bearing drives me nuts thinking of all that work. At my age I don't bend all that easy any more and rolling around on a creeper is not very exciting!

Re: Throw out bearing
I just replaced a NEW BCA T.O. bearing that lasted 6 miles, maybe a dozen clutch depressions. It sounded like a tin can full of marbles. The clutch was adjusted properly 1+ inch of freeplay, and was silent until depressing the pedal. It REALLY sucks. This was in a just restored 40 wagon. The bad bearing felt fine in my hand and seemed lubricated before installation. I don't know of any way to replicate the pressure it works under to test a new one so it is a crap shoot with these things. I pulled the engine, replaced it with another new bearing and it is fine so far.... Once again l learn that NEW does not = Good.

Re: Throw out bearing
if clutch is adjusted properly the throwout bearing would only make noise when clutch pedal is depressed

Re: Throw out bearing
you should not have any noise at an idle and in neutral the only time the throughout baring is turning is when you have your foot on the clutch. when you go down the road with your foot off the clutch it is not making contact with the pressure plate and you should not hear any weird noises...Brendan

Re: Throw out bearing
A "tink" could be an exhaust pipe hitting the frame. A bad throwout bearing would cause a roaring sound when with clutch depressed.

Re: Throw out bearing
Any chance the starter drive is not coming clear out and occasionally touching the flywheel? As stated above T.O. bearing noise would always be worse when the clutch is depressed. If that isn't the case it is probably something else. Could something be coming in contact with the fan as you drive? The fan can make sounds appear to come from somewhere else. I have heard exhaust leaks sound "tinkly" in my brand x vehicles. It could even be something like a bad rt front wheel bearing or something in the hubcap.
Let us know when you find it. Good luck. |

Re: Throw out bearing
Thanks very much guys for all the suggestions, I have not looked at it yet but will dig deeper and get back with a reply in the near future. Might get a couple more rides in yet seeing as we still are in early fall mode around these parts.
