TROG, The Race of Gentleman, Pismo Beach, Ca, 10/15 & 16, 2016
Wondering who from Fordbarn may be planning to attend this?
This has been a big attraction here on the East Coast, Jersey Shores, for the last several years now, but will be a first for the West Coast this year. I'm thinking this show could become an even bigger deal on the West Coast because this is considered to be the birthplace of the type of Hot Rods this show normally attracts. Any other thoughts or opinions on this? http://theraceofgentlemen.com/

Cool! Did you get your ticket (s) on the website I mentioned above, or is there other/better sources for tickets?

No I have not yet John. Might be to late and if so, I just might bring this to putt around and get a feel of this for next year. Plus it still has a "A" motor but have a 38 flathead I am thinking about putting. Mark.

Good to hear that some Fordbarners are planning to attend. Hoping to see and meet some of you there. Just look for your typical East Coast Guy who appears to be lost in the crowd

I'll be there.....
Waving the cars forward up to the starting line. Thanks for posting and the support guys!!! If anyone has any questions about the event, let me know. I'll answer the best I can. ZZLEGEND - That car looks great! Just an FYI - the race spots are all full. We can only run a limited number of cars so that each participant can make a few passes. There will be vintage parking out on the beach and you will be kicking yourself if you don't have your old tin to be cruising around town in. Can't wait to see it!

I'll be in Pismo that weekend camping at Pismo Coast Village and planning on picking up the new radiator from The Brass Works in Paso Robles for my '39 p/u. Don't know if I'll make it out to the sand for the races but I'm looking forward to seeing a bunch of nice cars in town.

would like to see them have a race in the SOUTH. Ormand beach fl is where the beach racing started. the local antique club had similar races on the beach a few years ago, lot of hotels in the ormand-daytona area...

Beach racing is attributed to Oromond Beach from 1903 And was soon occurring all around the US actually very early on. Here is a photo from Galveston TX beach race around 1909 and 1913 Pismo Beach 1924 It was quite a big sport back in the day!

Re: TROG, The Race of Gentleman, Pismo Beach, Ca, 10/15 & 16, 2016
Hello all, this should be a great event. Also, the Early Ford V8 Club Western National meet in Bakersfield during the week following should be fun as well. I live up in Northern CA, Specifically Windsor CA. About and hour North of San Fransisco on Hwy 101. Unfortunately , I can't make either event but I will be around town. It seems there will be quite a few people traveling through Northern CA or close. I am making an open offer to anyone who may need help, need a place to stop, or what ever while they are on the rode. I have a truck/trailer , a lift and quite a few parts. I will help however I can. Brendan who posted earlier is this thread also live is this are along with quite a few other car guys and we always welcome visitors. JM35 Sedan, if you want continue your CA trip, please give me a call or touch base with me on here or get a hold of Brendan or Tom Johnston and come on up to Northern CA. That goes for anyone else who wants to come visit who is a like minded car nut. Tom Johnston is leading a tour from the Western National meet back to Northern CA and I am sure anyone could tag along if they want. Between myself, Brendan ,other friends, and our V8 club members we can show you a good time.
Everyone have fun and don't hesitate to call if anyone has any troubles traveling to/from Pismo Beach or Bakersfield. Mike B 707 217 8751 |

Got here this afternoon and set up the trailer. Saw a Model T and a 2 dr. sedan with a banger driving through the camp ground along with what I think is a 3 window parked a couple of rows over. Also a couple of nice later models down town near the pier. Can't wait for tomorrow for a better look. Hope the weather holds up.

Walked the entire Pismo North campground where the registration is being held this afternoon. So many outstanding cars and M/C's. Bangers, flatties, and a little bit of everything else. Too many cool cars to photo with my crummy cell phone camera. I'm sure others will post some great photos. Did buy the obligatory t shirt, though.

Re: TROG, The Race of Gentleman, Pismo Beach, Ca, 10/15 & 16, 2016
Had a great day today at TROG West even though we had light rain almost all day. The cars and M/C were fantastic. All the vehicles were parked in one area this morning before they drove on to the beach. What a great photo op that was. Never saw so many nice Flathead powered cars in one spot. I took over 80 pictures today but it may be over a week from now before I can post them. We met up with Brendan Taylor today and got a group pic with him, Frank Miller and I in front of some very cool cars. Will be back tomorrow for half the day, then off to Bakersfield for the EFV-8 Club's WNM.

Re: TROG, The Race of Gentleman, Pismo Beach, Ca, 10/15 & 16, 2016
Well,a little wet all day but not bad, and a whole lot of people. I should have taken a bunch of pictures, but hey,,,,,,,i am old. That lot where they were all parked was great. Never seen that many old flathead Harleys in one spot. And that twin flathead powered pickup? A lot of thought went in to the details. Just like every one else, I enjoyed watching them go down the ramp and punching it to get thru the loose sand. Cell phone pictures kind of suck. A great day on the beach.

Odd, seems like most of the photos on HAMB are of non TROG eligible cars. of coure those may be what caught the photographers eye. how many cars actually ran the beach?

Hi All,
Here is a link to photobucket of photos taken at TROG on Sat. The rain put a damper on things , but after a 2 hour delay, they got the racing going. Hopefully, next year the weather will be better and they will have a bit more organization. http://s272.photobucket.com/user/s35...ry/TROG%202016 |

I heard that the waves/tides were really quite heavy and an issue . . . having it when there was a full moon makes it kind of tough. Sounds like everybody had a great time - wish I was back 'Out West' for this gig!

Some people bitched and moaned about not able to see the race yesterday, i had a great time. like John said, i have never seen so many kool Flathead powered cars in one spot. yesterday they had a show in a campground where a lot of racers stayed.some of the other racers drove there cars in. i had a great time and saw so many great cars! also seeing Frank Miller and John Mason was Kool, they are good guys. it was hard for me to see people there where so many and i get spun-out, especially if i hear a hot flat head running. i am glad i went!

Considering the uncontrollable weather and tidal conditions the Oiler's did the best they could to put this event on. I was a little disappointed about Sunday at first, but going to the campground and seeing all the great looking cars, MC's and of all things some very cool antique camping trailers and motorhomes. One was actually Flathead powered. I have posted lots of pics on Facebook that I can't post here using my iPhone.

As John said, the cancellation allowed us to see more of the cars and talk with the owners. it also forced us over to the campgrounds where we saw some really cool vintage trailers. Were we out the money for the tickets because they did not race? Not really because the event needs money to happen and this is what brought all these great vehicles and their owners/builders to Pismo Beach.

It looks like I've really gotta put a space in the schedule next June if/when they do it again back here on the right coast! I really love the Ormond Beach idea! The photo Brendan posted of him and JM and Frank is one of those priceless moments! Forgive me Brendan for stealing it! I hope Chuck can forgive me for stealing and reposting this shot from the V8 meet!

Sure wish you three guys would have wore those bright yellow speedos so I could have picked you out. Must have passed you taking that picture. But the crowd was plentiful. Mark.

Re: TROG, The Race of Gentleman, Pismo Beach, Ca, 10/15 & 16, 2016
A huge thanks from the Oilers and The Race of Gentlemen family for your support. We almost didn't race saturday as the entrance to the beach was flooded. We asked the state to bring some loaders in and fill the low spots with sand, but the state of California was worried that it might disrupt the clams natural habitat. Ooohhh Kayyy.... We actually moved the entire set up three times. It was all put up Wednesday afternoon and wiped out that night. We moved it back Thursday 80 feet and it was wiped out Thursday night. We then set it up Friday again and the event company said if it gets wiped out one more time, the races will be off. We drove down Friday night at around 1:00 am and everything was under water, fences were all knocked down and the barriers and bleachers were floating around the beach. The entrance was a 3 foot deep swiming pool and the event staff and state police were saying Cancel. We said that if we can get everyone in on the high side, we could make it work. Their concern was that when the tide went out, and we got 12,000 people and 150 vintage cars down on the beach, that when tide came back, it may all get trapped there and stuck again, causing a nightmare. We said it could be done. So Saturday morning at sunrise, the event staff set up all the fences again, put the barricades in place, pushed the bleachers back and the state police surveyed the beach and gave us the green light to give it a try at around noon. It took us over an hour to move the vehicles on to the beach. (wildwood takes about 20-30 minutes) We got everyone staged and lined up the cars in the rain. We were about to start and the state patrol stopped us again to survey the beach again. We finally got to roll around 2:00. Had a great day of racing all day in the pouring rain for 12,000 smiling faces. Saturday night, the waves went higher and knocked out all the fencing and barricades again. The event staff and beach patrol had it and told us to cancel. We didn't want to let our fans down so diverted the show to the campgrounds.
Thank you everyone for understanding that this isn't something that is set up the morning of. It's a long arduous journey, especially in a state where there is only one beach left that people are allowed to drive on. We feel like the impossible was accomplished this past weekend, and it was due to each and every one of you amazing car enthusiasts. We cant thank you enough.

I was in Pismo all weekend and I was really surprised that any racing occurred at all. Goes to show how dedicated all the volunteers and event staff were. As far as CA and driving on the beach goes, I hate to say it but maybe Oregon would be a better alternative. Just a thought. [/QUOTE]

Jason in TX, thanks for posting details of what went on behind the scenes to get the races going on Saturday. I had no idea there were all those complications prior to start of races Saturday.
