Default Speedo check out and lube

Hi, this is Martin in Ohio. Saw the postings by SoCalPlaneDoc on sending out his speedo for rebuild. My oval speedo on e28 phaeton started making a grinding noise today as I drove on our beautiful country roads. I could feel the grinding by touching the control panel plus hearing the noise. At this time, the readout is still steady without bouncing around.

My question is, can the speedo be serviced at home without going to the specialist? If my speedo is running dry, it hasn't made any indication until today. Thinking if no permanent damage done, why not try to lubricate it if I can get it apart? Any advice on home disassembly is much appreciated. Also, regarding proper lubricant. I believe the cable is OK and was lubricated recently.

Regards,

I use a stack of powerful magnets and a razor knife to remove the oval cover, then dig out all the old dried grease. I give it a few drops of motor oil and soem Mystik JT-6 grease. I also put oil and grease on the the gears and shaft ends.

I thought about learning to do mine but right now between the Model A, my planes, and the holidays coming, I have enough to do...
I did take the guts out to see if it just might need cleaning but ended up putting it back together... time to hire an expert...
