300 c.i.d. Valve clearance and ignition timing?
I can not find specs for 1956 F100 pickup with the 300 straight 6 motor.
Can somebody help me out? I Need to adjust the long overdue valve clearance and set the timing. I gapped the points at .020”. |

A 300 six has a three grove crankshaft damper. A 240 looks the same but has one groove. I don't remember the 223, but I do remember they go like stink.

Probably need to positively ID the engine before you can go too much further with a tuneup.
But I'd only be guessing where to start looking... There should be a casting number on the block up until the mid 60's, or a metal ID tag after that. It will help if you can find it. http://techlib.fordsix.com/fordsix-t...dentification/ . Last edited by dmsfrr; 12-31-2020 at 11:43 AM. |

The original 223 will have two nuts holding on the valve cover on top of it. Later 6 cyls. will have small bolts around the gasket area of the valve cover.

I find no tag anyplace on the engine. I am familiar with the falcon engine and the 200. I ain’t one of them I have owned and rebuilt a couple them. I bought it as a 300, it has lots of power and is a real gas hog. I just can’t find any specs even if it isn’t a 300. |

Re: 300 c.i.d. Valve clearance and ignition timing?
I think I made a big mistake on the year.
I now believe it’s a ‘65 not ‘56. When I got the motor it had an alternator, still has, the exhaust manifold was cracked, I took the manifolds from a ‘72 that I was junking out. The previous owner of the ‘72 said it was a 240. So that would tell us it sure isn’t a 223. |

these engines have hydraulic lifters 3/4 of a turn after contact for lifters.

Thanks Darrell.
I kinda figured it might have hydraulic lifters. I set the timing to what seems to run best and start without kicking back on th starter. |

Ok, I figured it out.
A ‘56 Ford takes a cartridge type oil filter. Mine takes a spin on so it is not a ‘56 but a 65. It’s been a long time since the seller told me what year this engine is. Thanks to everybody that helped straighten me out. I have been running it in a ‘48 Nash Ambassador with an all synchro three speed out of an ecoline and a Jeep 3.08:1 rear end. Same wheel bolt pattern as the Nash. |

not true with all as a spin on adapter was added to a lot.as mentioned some numbers would help to narrow down

Hi Aaron,
I replied to your message with some 240 six tune up specs I found (passenger car). Should be close enough for truck too. Sal |

Re: 300 c.i.d. Valve clearance and ignition timing?
I thought of that too 54Vick, but this one does not have an oil filter adapter.
The oil filter screws on directly to the block. I had a 1967 3/4 ton pickup with 300 engine some 40 years ago that I replaced a cracked piston in but I don’t remember any of the tune-up specks. I just remember how it pulled my 23 foot trailer house like it wasn’t even there. I will go with what Sal posted and thank everybody that took time to post on this thread. |

215/223/262 have the manifolds on the left (driver's) side while the 240/300 have the manifolds on the right side and distributor on the left (driver's) side.

Also; I understand that some 240's had a smaller combustion chamber. Newc
