Default Transmission questions

Just got my t up and running and took it for a test drive. Noticed some issues which I am not sure are operator error or if I need to adjust something:
1: Clutch and brake pedals do not pop back when hand brake is in center position especially the clutch. Brake comes up a little
but clutch stays down quite a bit
2: Seems to struggle at first going into reverse so Increase throttle and then it goes too fast when it gets going
3: Car sputtered when going into high gear and even died.
4: Was backing into the garage and the car was overheating

Pretty sure that the car was overheating due to something either hanging up or slipping

The overheating made me think the bands are too tight but reading some of the forums make me think they are too loose. Not sure which way to go. Engine also seems to be idling high so I know I need to adjust that as well. Thanks

The lever on the left side performs more than just a braking function. It is used in conjunction with the left pedal for driving forward and the center pedal for reverse. In the center position, the pedal and lever is in neutral. The car can be started in neutral or reversed in neutral by using the center pedal. Left pedal all the way down to get moving in low gear with lever either in mid travel or all the way forward. When shifting into the top gear, the lever is pushed all the way forward and the left pedal is allowed to go all the way back up.

The process of operation requires a coordinated effort with the lever and pedals as well as the throttle lever on the column. Ford designed the system to make the operator comfortable while driving down the road. All a driver has to do is steer the car. The brake pedal can be used any time but the lever can be pulled back into neutral to stop or all the way back to aid in braking in tight situations.

The model T transmission with bands and planetary set is very much like a 2-speed automatic transmission except that the functions are manually controlled instead of hydraulically controlled.

Radiators can get plugged up with crud so that is one possibility. Adjusting the timer is also important to engine function. If it has a distributor then it should be timed for best operation. This is a good Link.
