How do you know if your coupe was originally a trunk or rumble?

If it was a rumble seat you would have holes in the fenders to mount the step plates.

Roadster here, not a coupe. Has rumble seat and a luggage rack with a big “steamer style” trunk. All the tools, oil, rags, etc go in the trunk. The occasional overflow goes in the rumble seat but I’m careful not to put anything heavy in there. It’s too hard to lean way over and lift it over the side.

31 Coupe. I have a trunk. It sure comes in handy when on an extended tour. I always carry spare parts and tools. I also have plenty of room for luggage and a small cooler when touring. Works great for me!

Yes I put a rumble seat in my 31 deluxe coupe, car was all pieces when I started the restoration in 1981. There has been 4 generations of our family that have ridden in the rumble seat, including our 3 sons , then when married ,years ago. We have an ice cream shop about 5 miles away with a beautiful drive along a lake ,that is a route that we haven driven for years, with various family and friends enjoying the ride at their request . We have many pictures of kids over the years,in the rumble seat , anticipating the ride.
As for travelling ,we leave the seat cushion at home for suitcases etc on the floor . I also installed the roll down window back in the 1980’s , love it.

Mine has a seat, but I think at one time it had a trunk. There's a chrome plug where the handle for a trunk would be.

My Roadster originally had a rumble seat, useless of no value. I converted it to trunk, now I have something I can use.

Put lap seat belts in my coupe's rumble seat and quickly realized that the rumble seat is not a safe place for passengers. In a collision (with seat belts), the rumble occupant will be thrown forward into either the coupe's rear window or shorter people will smack the edge of the of rumble seat opening.

The rumble seat makes the coupe a four-passenger vehicle and looks good.
That's my rumor for the day.

Rumble seat, nice to ride in the fall through the woods, however at 6' tall and 240 pounds, takes a while to get in and especially out of.

I have a 30 Coupe that was converted to a Rumble Seat before I bought it as it doesn't look "factory". I have had this car at weddings for photo ops and the brides with their huge wedding dresses always want to get in there with their groom. Often a tough job to get them in there and then back out again.... Also plus sized people alway want to get in as well and it is never a good thing......

I will not travel with any passengers in the rumble seat as I do feel they are dangerous in a sudden stop. I have seen people with their Grandkids in the rumble seat that they have built a wooden 2 x 4 stud frame to prevent the lid from slamming during a panic stop. Also split pool noodles to line the edges of the front edge opening to prevent chipped teeth and black eyes....

My favorite Model A story is at a gas station stop, this woman came over to chat with me. She stated that as a very young gal, her brother and she would be in a Model A couple as their family drove from Northern Illinois to Texas every Summer during the Depression. The family A auto was a standard coupe with a trunk. The 2 kids rode in the back with the lid up for the entire trips. She said it was the best times of her life back then. Now a days, Child and Protective Services would have these parents locked up.

1929 Special Coupe, with a boot, as we say in Australia, or trunk for the USA.
