Default 35 clutch question

I installed a new clutch,pressure plate, throw out bearing in my 35 and without the return spring that is hooked to the rear tranny mount connected the pedal goes 3/4 of the way down before the throw out bearing hits pressure plate fingers. Should this hit when the pedal is higher. I have not started the motor yet. THANKS

You need to have only one to two inchs of free pedal travel. Adjust your linkage rod from the cluch arm to the pedal to take the slack out.

3/4" to one inch is about the correct free play. the small spring on the throwout bearing hub to the front bearing retainer, retracts the throwout bearing ALL the way to the rear preventing the bearing from coming in contact with the pressure plate fingers unless the pedal calls for it, you need the spring.

The spring is on the throw out bearing hub. I don't have the pedal return spring hook up. may be when I start the motor up the centrifical force of the flywheel will set the pressure plate fingers, but now it just seemed like a lot of play.

If you are judging this excessive travel with the floor boards off you are not aligned correctly you must have your floor boards installed to determine the throw. As already posted you should have about 1" of free travel before the throw out bearing engages the pressure plate fingers and begins to release. If you have your floor board installed and you have this excess travel you need to readjust the clevis link to the throw out lever. The clutch return spring has no bearing on when the clutch engages and neither does the centrifugal force on the fingers. You might look for a pre 1955 Motors Service manual when you are at the next swap meet or at the local used book store, its nice to have for service related instructions.

the clevis is almost all the way out. how far down should the 3 clutch release arms move down toward the clutch when you are tightening down the 6 shoulder bolts to the flywheel.

Dpends on the thichness of the disc( they are not all the same) not really important , should be plenty of adj available.

Don't confuse pedal free-play with throw-out bearing free-play. Normal overall ratios are about 11:1 or so from the pedal to the T/O bearing, so with the floor in place, and ALL return springs connected, you should have 1"-1 1/2" of pedal free play, or about +/- 3/32"- 1/8" T/O bearing clearance to the clutch fingers. It sounds like your pressure plate might be too "short", or wrong for your setup, if you are out of adjustment, as pressure plates come in several finger heights.
