I have a cast aluminum fan which is much stronger and I only move about the fan one inch or so when there is no compression. I agree that moving the timing gear is always discouraged by the experts that write manuals and articles, and in U-Tube videos about setting the timing. Original steel fans often crack and can be very dangerous when break off.

Good news! It's up and running! I checked for TDC with a mirror and flashlight, loosened the cam screw and used my Nu-Rex timing tool and moved distributor cam so the rotor lines up with #1 contact. I want to thank everyone who replied!
