Default Howard Cam

Anyone have any specs on a Howard M12 cam? Got one in a engine I pulled today. It's pretty radical.

Intake duration is 274 at .360 lift. Exhaust is 277 with .360 lift. Checked at .015 lift. 53 deg overlap with 112 deg lobe separation. Listed as a full race cam. I also have one, but haven't degreed it on my own.

Jack. I have an Old Potvin cam in my 50. It's marked Potvin 415. I cannot find any information on it. Do you have any?

Most of the cam specs have little to do with the way an engine runs. The ramps and lift rate are an unknown here. However if the duration at .050" is listed, you'll have a better idea on how it will run in your application.

Thanks flatjack9 and Paul Bennett. It's quite lumpy and runs strong in a 286 CI flathead. I got it from Mark Kirby (motor city flathead) several years ago.

Not sure who's running Howard cams, but back in the Day the F9 was a very good track cam, and worked vert well on the street.

The Howard M8, classified as a 3/4 race cam in the mid '50's was a very popular cam for general street use, not to lumpy on the idle. I thought that I had an M8 in my 59AB, that is what I specified to the engine builder. Found out a few years ago that the cam in the engine is a Weber F1. It has always worked very well, a little lumpy on the idle, if the idle is set to low.

Your Potvin 415 may be a Potvin 3/8 with a .415 gross lift.
Bored & Stroked may know for sure.
Potvin cams were/are powerful cams. I run a 425 in my engine

I think Howard's Cams are still in business. Might be worth Googling and giving them a call.

Howard Cams is located right here in Oshkosh. They were bought by Competition Products. They do not have masters for any of the old grinds. They grind my cams for me.

Curious: I noticed the list "custom grinds" for flatheads. Do you give them the specs or do they recommend grinds from their list?

Mostly give them the specs. Some have been incorporated into their recommendations.

They don't seem to be real keen on regrinds. Yes they do have new cores.
