What is the best way to remove valve guides,, when you don't have the proper tool?

If you have the original style valves with flared base and split guides, my recommendation would be to buy the tool. You could damage the casting around the guides without the proper tool.
If you have the modern style valves, you can remove the valve keepers and slide the valves out, then tap the guides out.

Get the tool that wraps around the valve stem and tap valve with brass hammer. Save yourself lots of time and headache

some of those guides are real tight from years of crud oozing into them. some i have had to cut the valve stems off, take the valve out the top, then drive the guides out with a punch.

so

i. like the others would suggest buying or borrowing the proper tool. you don't want to damage a seat, guide boss or valve.

Ditto to the comments above. I removed 16 this summer with the correct tool, after 2 or 3 it became an easy procedure.
