Rear hub removal-one that does not want to come off.
I am trying to get one of my rear hubs off. I do not have the Wilson or other "official" Model A hub removal tool. I am using a three prong puller. Have put the axle nut on backward and put a "spacer" in between the axle and the puller shaft. Tightened it down, but the thing will not come off!
Any suggestions besides buying a $100+ puller? Will a little heat work? A bigger hammer(to tap on it)? Etc.?????? Any good advise would be appriciated. Thanks

My only suggestion (which I do not like) is to give the axle nut a substantial knock with a reasonably heavy hammer while under load with the puller, if you can get a hammer near it.

Re: Rear hub removal-one that does not want to come off.
I do not recommend going past "Scary" when tightening a 3-leg puller! On the worst
"A" hub I ever encountered, I used a 3-legger even though I own some better alternatives. After moving on to "terrifying" on the torque scale, I heard a loud BANG! and found the (fortunately, junk) drum split! I did not check, but I would assume hub was warped by that point. I would borrow, buy, or steal one of the several types that pulls from central part of hub. |

You can reinstall the axle nut, but leave it a few threads loose, then put the wheel back on and drive around the block. This will often loosen the taper.

Fred, did you loosen up the brake adjustment on that wheel and release the E-brake. Tighten up the puller quite tight and then with a 2-3 lb. hammer give the end to the puller shaft a good solid hit but not like you are hitting a home run. If the hub doesn't come off with that treatment, tighten the puller again and try the hammer again. This has worked for me.

Either a $100 puller, or, a $200 drum and hub.

I haven't used it yet, but I have one of the pullers made by Mitchell. $85 including shipping.

Apply heat and use the puller and hammer.

See if your local Model A (or EFV8) club has one to loan (or maybe rent to a non member).

Re: Rear hub removal-one that does not want to come off.
Thanks guys. I got it off! Used a bigger hammer to tap all the way around it, tightened the puller, tapped it on on the shaft end a few times and off it came.
Lindy, I did have to turn off the brake adjustment to be able to get it all the way off. Charlie I did think about our club but I would have to drive about 50 miles to pick up a tool. With the price of gas, I thought I would "hammer away" at it Again thanks for the thoughts guys.
