Default Speedo gear retaining clip

Aloha,
I have a issue with the speedometer, I narrowed down (I believed) to the speedo gear on the drive shaft, it is moving back and forth. I think it maybe that either the retaining clip as slipped out of the groove or it is broken. Is there a way to get to the retaining clip without removing the whole drive shaft?
Any help greatly appreciated.

take off the speedo "turtle" and look in, feel around with pick/long thin screwdriver---coat hanger wire--etc----if it is missing work some wire around and twist it
