35 coupe gas tank mounting question
Why are springs used to mount the tank, and how tight should they be tightened down. Thanks

Re: 35 coupe gas tank mounting question
I would imagine the springs are there to compensate for frame flexing. If the tank was mounted solid maybe it could crack or develope a leak from the stress. Roads were pretty crummy back then.

The springs were added to compensate for frame flexing. The tank will crack in time without these. Dave C.

Re: 35 coupe gas tank mounting question
I just put my 36 tank in last night and all though the bolt kit came with castle nuts and drilled bolts, the tank has captured(cage) nuts mounted to it. What keeps the spring and bolts from working out over time with out cotterpins? Maybe Dave or Scott knows the answer....Thanks, Jim. ( P.S. Dave, looking forward to your picnic this summer!)

Re: 35 coupe gas tank mounting question
The stock tank mounting bolts had the heads drilled for safety wire. On the inside lip of your frame you will see a small loop in the center of the inner rail. This loop is near the gas tank bolt. The safety wire is looped through the head of the bolt and then one end of the wire passes through the loop. When the two ends of the wire are joined it is twisted together with "safety wire" pliers.

••••If the tank has captive nuts in all 3 locations what holds the bolt spring in place if it's sitting on top of the tank? ••••How do I access the top side of the tank to safey wire the bolts if the body is on teh frame? ••••All three bolts go from the bottom up right? •••• Any detailed pics for a '35-36 install?

Re: 35 coupe gas tank mounting question
Anybody????
I got under the car a few minutes ago and seen that I could get my hand in to the passengers side if I really needed to but There is definitely a captive nut on that side so I am a little confused where the spring goes at that point.

Re: 35 coupe gas tank mounting question
I just looked at my Early Ford V8 Club of America book and it showed diagrams for 35 & 36 gas tanks. The pic looks like the tank sits on the anti squeak pads then the long bolt with spring already on the bolt goes through the frame and threads into gas tank. That right?

Yeah, that's how I understand it. Kind of like the radiator bolts with springs.
