37 hood hinge problem
I tried to replace the driver's side hood hinge on my '37 today. Everything seemed to go well, untill I tried to close the hood. The hood stayed open several inches as is shown in the first picture. I also noticed that there was a deep scrape on the hinge plate as shown in the second picture. Lastly I noticed that the plate angles in at the very aft end, which is where the body panel angles out. I don't have much experience with working on old cars, so I include all these details because I don't know what is really relevant. The hinges are Vintique 78-16796/7-s painted black hinges. As far as I know they are the only ones making the hood hinges for this car. Has anybody else had this kind of problem? It seems rather odd. There are only a few bolts to deal with. It should be bolt off, bolt on...
<div>Any help would be most welcome! |

Re: 37 hood hinge problem
Could it be that you've installed them upside down???

Re: 37 hood hinge problem
What happened to the original hinges you took off?

Re: 37 hood hinge problem
Something looks wrong with the arms on the hinge. The arms should lay back almost flat, but they seem to look the wrong shape. Here is a shot of an original '37 hinge and one of a reproduction hinge on my '37 for comparison.IMG_1743.jpg

Re: 37 hood hinge problem
To reply to the responses. The hinge is bolted on upside down. The tab for the side panel will be on the forward end instead of the aft end. If you put on the wrong side hinge, the side panel will not fit on because it will hit the pivot point for the forward hinge. I know because I made that mistake
I am replacing the hinge because the old one was bent and binding up. The one I ordered was sold as being a 1937 hinge. I thought this was correct because of the part number 78-16796/7-s. From what I know the 78 prefix pertains to the 1937 Ford. bill3337, I was wondering about the stainless hinge, like what you show. Is that Vintique hinge, or is it from someone else? I was thinking that the stainless hinge I have seen listed might be of a better quality. Thanks for all the replies! |
