Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
The steering box is looking good. You're going to think you are driving a brandy new 39 CS.

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Yesterday, Mike and I drove Joe's '48 Mercury Convertible down to Sarasota, actually to Long Boat Key, to deliver it to him, after doing some work on the car. The weather cooperated on the drive down but, we experienced a heavy rain for several hours while we enjoyed lunch at the Columbia restaurant in St. Armands Circle. Thanks to Joe for treating us to lunch. We had a slight problem getting the Merc to start, after a short shut down... We surmised that the problem was heat... related to the starter motor... After a cool down, the Merc fired right up... We'll pull the starter and have it tested (again) this time at a different shop... Mike and I drove back to Tampa in my F-150, and smoked some really good cigars on the trip... Another fun day with Flatheads and friends. Here are a few photos I took while driving the Merc... Can you tell I was having fun...?

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Mike and I went to visit our friend Don, yesterday. He is recovering form a major operation. He's in psychical therapy now, for several weeks but, he'll be back behind the wheel of his '37 Ford LowBoy Coupe, and playing in the garage with all of us real soon. Hang in there Don.

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
I met Don some time ago at Vic's shop. Fun guy to have on a car project. I had several rides in his hotrod. One long one up to Garlits museum. Boy that will get your bladder working overtime.
So let's have a speedy recovery and see you this winter. John |

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
I'm thinking about converting my '39 CS to tube shocks... It's shocking, I know but, I've gotten just about every other mechanical situation resolved, and it's only taken me 26 years of driving her to get to this point, so I thought I'd go the next step. I've been procrastinating, thinking about having the OEM shocks rebuilt, and I still might go that route but, I'd like to hear from any of you guys that have used the various 'kits' available to do the conversion, with pros and cons. Lets just say I'm doing my due diligence, before committing myself... Or having myself committed...

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Glad you are considering having yourself committed Vic. I have thought about having you committed myself, but too many hoops to jump through. ROFLMSAO Lawson

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
I know Bill, I just wanted to stir things up a bit... Haven't done that in a while... See Lawson's response above... LOL I wanted to find a 'bolt on' kit, so I could remove the OEM's and send them up to you for rebuilding. Guess I should have made my intentions clearer.

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Hi Everyone, If you were on the boards early this morning I was using this as my avatar.
Other than Lawson's dragster, this may be the best photo I've seen on FordBarn! Vic, I'm sure you didn't shoot this yourself while driving, so this must be credited to the official Cigar City Flatheads photographer/lackey, right!? Otherwise, I vote for the stock shocks rebuilt by you-know-who and his staff of assistants.

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Hi Jeff,
That photo is actually my attempt at a selfie, while I was driving Joe's '48 Merc Rag Top... LOL As for the shocks, I will most likely keep the stock set up. It was just another example of me thinking out loud... If I can remove the OEM shocks (for a rebuild, by this guy I know ) and temporarily install the tube shock conversion, that might work for now. As it is, the OEM's have not functioned properly for a number of years... I can drive over a dime and tell if it is heads or tails...
