Default Exhaust/Intake Gasket

I have a fellow Model A'er who is replacing his exhaust/intake gasket. He asked me which side goes towards the engine, but I couldn't tell him because I wasn't familiar with the gasket he has.

It is metal-clad on one side; with an asbestos type material (it is not asbestos, but I couldn't think of another word) on the other side.

I am guessing the metal-clad side goes towards the engine.

Am I right?

Ray is right, the metal goes towards the hot exhaust manifold.

Ray & Tom - After I wrote my question, and thought about it for awhile; I came to the realization the metal goes towards the exhaust too.

Thanks for your confirmation,

Metal side to the manifold. Allows the exhaust manifold to expand when hot and contract while cooling down without prematurely wearing out the gasket.
