I am in the process of negotiating the purchase of a flathead component with a fellow 'barner in America. As I'm in New Zealand, I find paypal to be the quickest and easiest method of getting funds deposited overseas, however, this particular member cannot accept this form of payment, requesting a bank cheque in US funds. I can send this method of payment, however, this process considerably protracts the entire transaction. Is there on the 'barn, any member Stateside who operates a paypal account that could forward on my payment to this member? I am NOT a scammer, but really want this particular item offered as quickly as possible, consequently, am not prepared to wait a coupla months. Thank you in anticipation, Brian

Why does he need to ask JWL, me or anyone else to help him buy $50 worth of parts ... from "a fellow 'barner in America."

Why doesn't this "FELLOW BARNER" work with him?

(I guess I'm old-fashioned but I'd send Brian the parts and trust him to pay me ... rather than wait for a check from New Zealand to clear.)

I would simply say 'no' to anyone who would not agree to using PayPal.

I do know that international transaction fees are quite a bit higher. Cant remember the exact difference but I want to say it goes from 2.9 % to around 10%. Not sure if it is sent as a gift.

Hey Brian - if you end up needing help, just ping me . . . I'll get it done. I've worked with some guys that are dead set against PayPal (just the way they are). I usually don't go purchase Cashier's Checks (too much of a pain in the ass), I just send a check and they can let them clear (if they'll do it that way). Again - be happy to help a fellow Barner.

Some folks just don't trust paypal or any other payment method other than cash or money order.

Brian, I've helped several other Barner's in NZ and AU with similar things in the past, and was happy to do so. With your long time association here on the Barn and all the help you offer folks here in the past, many of us here would be more than willing to help you on something like this. It looks like you have this one covered with some fine offers for help, but if something like this comes up again, put me on your contact list as a willing helper.

Brian contacted me on another matter and because of the outrageous handling
fees and time involved in his BANK check clearing a New York bank clearing house, the
two US banks I use won't directly handle foreign checks anymore ,not even Canadian
bank checks, we weren't able to do business. I'd love to be able to accommodate
him but my concern is a third party (paypal) having any of my information. My good mates down under have actually sent me cash in US funds ( risky for sure ) to move
things along.
Are my fears unfounded using paypal ? It seems to me at some point many
of the unreasonable regs and fees I face must be faced by paypal as well.
Hear me out a bit more.......7 or 8 years ago I was sending Gragham in NZ
crates of trans parts thru FED EX. I'd call FED EX get their charge then add my
charge . I'd get his check, which cleared my bank in 3 days max with no extra fees
and that was it. Today everything seems up side down.
It's hard to believe a bank check from the Bank of Nova Scotia ( Canada)
can no be honored.........it must first go thru a NY clearing house.

I use PayPal for almost everything and have never heard of any issues with it. It is almost instant. I would assume any form of transaction can be manipulated, but so far I find PayPal very useful, it is about the only payment method you can use on ebay.

you should be able to directly wire the funds from your bank to his bank overnight...
get the name of his bank and the necessary account and routing numbers.
your fee should be 10 dollars or so from your bank,, you do not need pay pal

I was thinking the same thing as Frank. You need the SWIFT number for the bank
and it's done in a couple of days.

It is pretty amazing you are right, I once bought an antique watch from Romania, why..I will never know, but paid thru paypal was instantaneous like the seller was across the street.

I was resistant when I first started to use it but Paypal is excellent for buyers after you get full usage set up. I've never had a security problem with them yet. I can't say on sellers though. I've always wondered what the sellers end of the deal might be like. I've done normal purchases and gift purchases to ease problems for some sellers before with no problems there either. Paypal protects the buyers but I've heard problems on the selling end since it favors the buyer pretty much. The gift deal is a different transaction though so it shouldn't favor anyone. A gift is a gift even if you are an Indian Giver.
