Default 1956 Mercury Serial Number Decoder

I would greatly appreciate help in decoding a 1956 Mercury serial number:

#56LA38922M#

Style is BU64D

Body Specif is 88-650-9E-24

We believe this to be a standard two door hard top "Medalist" because the car has no chrome trim under the side windows. We are trying to positively identify the car, determine the production numbers, the engine size, etc.

Thanks in advance for any help offered.

Best regards.

Ike

Can't help with most of it, but ALL '56 Mercs came with the 312 y-block regardless of trim level. For positive identification look for "ECZ" on the main caps and an aspirin sized dot on the crank flange.

Where do you guys keep finding these cars? I am insanely jealous ...

OH! The 56 MERC 312 had four HP ratings and that was determined by rocker cover and air cleaner color.

Ike Bunn, here's what the dot on the rear crank flange looks like.
Unless the car was built in Canada, they did things a bit differently up there.
