Default Early V8 canister oil filter

I would love to have a discussion with anyone who knows how the oil flows through the filter of an early v8 canister oil filter, that was installed on 1932+ v8s, often as a dealer, after-sale option. While changing my oil and filter I discovered that there appears to be no way for the oil to flow THROUGH the filter to enter the outlet pipe that goes up through the center of the filter, and to which the bolt that holds on the top bolts to. The filter slides down on to this tube (a stand pipe, the bottom of which attaches to the outlet return line) and is tightly sealed at both ends by a crimped rubber washer that seals tightly around the standpipe. There are no holes in the sides of this stand pipe, so any oil forced through the outside of the filter would just be trapped inside the filter. How does this thing work? There is a small cage that the filter sits on top of, but if oil can enter the standpipe at the bottom the filter would be completely bypassed.

All the ones I have seen have 2 holes in that standpipe for the oil return.

often the return holes are below the seat with the filter removed but when installed the spring in the cap pushes the filter past the holes and allows the oil to flow out being at the bottom ensures that any oil in the filter will return and not be trapped In saying this you need to ensure that your filters match your housing as some cheapy replacements may be a little shorter and not fit correctly

The Fram type oil filter did not come about until 1940. The first oil filters offered by Ford as accessories was the AC style in 1936, which was offered until 1940.

As Terry has correctly stated in his post (#4), prior to 1940, the AC type was the only one offered from 1936 through 1940. Here's a photograph of a proper '39 filter with proper oil lines, routing, etc.

Here's a photograph of a proper oil filter, lines and routing for 1940. Note this is the first engineered design routing. This was done through April, 1940.
