Transfer from a decedent as an inheritance by descent and distribution or as a legatee of the decedents’ will is not a sale and thus no sales tax, but if a transfer is the result of a sale from the estate, then the purchaser pays sales tax.

Cow Hampshire is the same (Title not required for Registrations on cars older than 10 years) except you can get the registration THEN file for a replacement title.

This will require an "in person" verification by the local police of the VID - so the vehicle has to be "in-state" (NH) to have this completed.

Even though the title is not required, a NH Title can then be transferred to your state and the process duplicated there.

I bought a 1930 AA Truck down in Connecticut. I later sold it but the buyer wanted to be sure it could be titled transferred to Texas. So I had to go through the rig-a-ma-role to create a Title in NH before the sale. Which gave the truck value to him.

One imagines given your line of "provenance" you can short cut all this and work with your Registry of Motor Vehicles to file for replacement.

The purpose of Vehicle Title is to limit the options of thieves on sale of stolen vehicles. You obviously can prove yours is not a theft.

If I were in this situation, I would discreetly try to get a duplicate title and just sit on it.
Put a Y.o.M. plate on it and drive.
Hagerty Insurance is not finicky about any of this.

actually Chris, dont believe any of the insurance companies care about registration- JC Taylor never asks if Im registered......

however, should you have a total loss, and not a title, you are sht out of luck with your claim.

I know that from personal experience. Dying is a complicated business, for those left behind

My biggest fear with all of this with a Model A Ford is, the DMV decides they want you to lift the body so they can see what the number is stamped on top of the frame. IF they know about that. Very few would.

Model A motors were swapped and scrapped and who knows what all over the years, so the car titled today often doesn't match the engine number that is on there now.

Be careful in this regard, because a VIN number you come up with might turn out to be Jim Bazooka's Coupe that was stolen in Fresno, Calif. in 1957 and hey what are you doing with it even though we see a Tudor sedan here now, not a coupe?? Car may be impounded and hauled away. It has happened from horror stories I have read over the years.

here in Ohio we sometimes have to reopen an estate to address issues like newly-discovered assets that emerged after the estate was closed. alas it is a cumbersome process since you essentially are repeating the entire procedure, with notification to heirs, etc. not quibbling with my good friend rotorwrench, since we all know, anything can happen in Texas lol.

Hadn't thought of that situation.

When I sold our Town Sedan to a guy from KY, I signed over the FL title to him.
When we bought it back 8 years later, he gave me back the same signed title.
He had not bothered to title or register it although he had driven it a good bit.

So I just got a duplicate title from FL and sat on it. Drove it with NC Y.o.M. plate displayed and my old FL horseless carriage plate under the seat.
When I sold the car a year later I signed the new FL title over to the buyer.

Next time I will ask my insurance carrier some "hypothetical" questions about the need to have an actual current NC title in my name....
