Default mystery backfire-Dummy me

Had a couple of treads on backfires lately...well mine started backfiring.
I had done some work on it, so why was it backfiring now?
Dummy me...I forgot to snug down the distributor hold down bolt.
Snugged it up, popping gone.

Sometimes it's the simplest things that cause the problems

Been there Ted. If not the rotor, the fuse, gas valve, key on, timing pin, or crank left in. I'm slowly slippin' away, I guess. So, far I've managed to keep her wheels on.

Now that's funny, like you and Rob, I've done all those too.

One of my wife's friends lost her husband to Motor Neurone Disease about a year and a half ago. They were keen Model Aers and she wants to continue driving her favourite one They had several and her favourite is a 1928 Roadster. We have a 1,000 miles rally coming up in a week or so and I suggested to her that I could upgrade her turn indicators. Well, as anybody who has an old car knows, one thing leads to another. When I drove it from one end of our house to the other so I could do that one tiny job, I noticed something not right in the rear end so I checked the hubs for tightness. Sure enough, one was loose so I fixed that. Then I took it for a drive and found the steering terrible and the death wobble evident. The car also backfired on over-run. That was the easiest thing to fix - just open up the GAV a little. From fixing the indicators, I have now fixed the rear end, rebuilt the steering box and turned the front drums. OH, and I stopped the backfiring!
I think I'll stop looking.

Synchro, Sounds like you are a good friend to have. While you are at it maybe you could overhaul the engine and put a new paint job on the car.

Yup, it happens to all of us. About a year ago i rebuilt a carburetor. I did a great job and pated myself on the back.

installed the carb, it would idle, but any throttle would kill the car. Unhappy, i walked back over to the bench, and there it was. The venturi that I forgot to install! DUH.

Not on a Model A, actually on an IH pickup. I carefully overhauled the carburetor and started it up. When flames appeared, I put them out with fresh dirt from a recently dug flower bed, and THEN I overhauled it again.

When I start laughing at myself I have a hard time stopping because there is so much to laugh at.

Have a Good One
