Proof the old girl can still do it
I kept it going for about a half mile. It still had more to give, but 60 felt like 80. Enough for me.

My roadster is for touring thru the countryside while enjoying the smiles and waves from other folks along the way. Why shorten the fun ?

The fastest my '30 Tudor has gone was around 70... on a trailer!

Re: Proof the old girl can still do it
Old31,
Minerva was AMAZINGLY smooth at that speed, her 19" Firestones had NOT even 1 balance weight & was smooth @ ALL speeds. She had full FLOAT-A-MOTORS & A RUBBER exhaust hanger & we could just hear the engine humming nicely & BOY, did the exhaust heater get HOT! Bill W.

Re: Proof the old girl can still do it
Often when younger people are looking at one of my As, someone will ask "How fast does it go?" I'm sure we have all had that. You should see the confused looks on their faces when I say "I don't know, I've never bothered to find out."
That said, when we travel outback, I cruise easily at 50 mph with camper trailer behind with my 26% Mitchell O/D engaged so log as I don't have a head wind. On most highways over here, 100 kph (about 62 mph) is the limit so there is no point trying for more.

The exhaust had a glasspack & out under the running board, like a NASCAR set up. The hanger was just a universal rubber clamp on one, I don't have a pic. I only ran her that fast, ONCE! Without the Weber, the Mallory dist, counter balanced crank, etc, she would never have run that speed. Vermin is BONE stock & will be a 45 to 50 car. Bill W.

Re: Proof the old girl can still do it
With the aerodynamics of an A, 55 is fast enough for me. I enjoy life, being alive, all of my limbs still intact and functioning etc. o:

Re: Proof the old girl can still do it
As for my 1928 Tudor, I have never worried about how fast it will go, but how fast it will stop.
Skinny tyres and drum brakes do not help the whoa factor. |

Re: Proof the old girl can still do it
I pushed my old Coupe to 60+ a few times, for at least a mile at a stretch ( timing against mile-markers), but that was the limit.
80,000+ miles on an original engine and chassis, etc. Handling and braking were a little sqirrely at that speed... She was MUCH happier at 50 or less. |

Re: Proof the old girl can still do it
My first car in high school was a '30 fordor in Big Bear Lake, Ca., 6,000' elevation. Heading down the back grade to the desert on a long straight stretch I kicked it into neutral and coasted as fast as it would go, terminal speed was 70 MPH! I guess shoeboxes aren't very aerodynamic. Fortunately, I didn't need to use the brakes. 62 years later I lost the need for speed and enjoy the more "Model A" pace of 45-50.

40-45 is all Ms. Daisy likes to go... One does push an old lady more than she wishes to go

Re: Proof the old girl can still do it
I have had my old girl over 60. " Just feel the tension man, what a ride ". Now I have them V8 wheels with a little wider tire on them, Have not to try them out yet. I'm still down for improvements. Will soon have my tank boiled and sealed, and both axles rebuilt. Front is done. Like ian Simpson said, Stopping is a bit more important.
