Spark plugs and Spark plug gap
My 36 which is running a 59AB motor started running a bit rough lately so I pulled some of the spark plugs and they
are dark and a little oily. The plugs in question are Champion H10C, should I stick with the same plug and what gap should I set them at ? Since I live in So.Cal. I don't think I need Hot or Cold plugs. Thank you, H36

Re: Spark plugs and Spark plug gap
I'm a little out of my field here, but ambient temperature has nothing to do with hot or cold plugs. It is how much spark the plug puts out.
I am pretty sure the plugs should be gapped at 0.25. Now, I am ready to be corrected. LOL

I wondered where ( and still do) this thread would go . Plug gap always goes with the engine , not the ignition system. The engine design ( flathead valve in block) of low compression ratios and poor air fuel travel decides the gap needed to ignite the air fuel mixture. Heat range is the distance heat has to travel to get to a cooler surface and again is decided by vehicle design. IE: Weight, hp, fuel micture, gear ratios and driving habits. New plugs today ( with projected electrodes etc) will auto correct heat range approx 6 ranges ( 3 up and 3 down) based on driving habits. No longer does the mechanic need to adjust heat up and down the range based on a rear axle change etc........ |

Re: Spark plugs and Spark plug gap
Also if you have a well worn engine with blowby(oily plugs) a plug that is hotter will help burn those deposits off and increase the life of the plug. With Champion, I think the higher the number, the hotter the plug.

Oh, my bad. Sorry 'bout that. Put the decimal point in the wrong place.
