Default Rear Axle pinionshaft

We have a 3.54 gear set belived to have been from a 36 .The end of the pinion shaft was never drilled to acept the pinion shaft ,coupler locking pin .Did the early rear ends not use a locking pin to lock the coupler to the shaft ?and should we drill it and use a pin .Johnny

I have never seen a Ford R&P set without a hole in the splined pinion shaft. Just wondering if that could be a cut down pinion, possibly from a long shaft Merc., and they did not put the hole through the resplined pinion shaft? In any case, it would be best to have the hole, but it's not going to be easy to drill if the pinion spline is hardened. JMO
