Default Advice on Installing 292 Y Block Rear Main Rope Seal

Any advice on how to properly install the rear main rope seal on my newly machined 1961 292 Y Block? It is the original engine going back into my son's 1961 F100. I have the service manual, but was thinking the procedure might be a bit different for the newer synthetic rope seals versus the original asbesto rope seal. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Ted Eaton has a webpage on his site that should prove useful

If this is the seal by Best gasket, you might give them a call. No directions with the seal? If not, I'm surprised because they have good instruction with the 312 seal.

Read the link on post 2, Ted is one of the best Y block builders in the country. He is very free to share his knowledge. I can add to make all the parts hospital surgically clean. I use acetone to clean the parts, including the threads on the two long bolts, and the holes they thread in to. If you have an old style seal, soak it in oil. Overnight is good. Clean the part of the crank where the seal will ride with a narrow bit of crocus cloth or sand paper. Stay away from synthetic lubes.

Of all the nuggets Ole Don just mentioned, the most important I think is "Stay away from synthetic lubes". Synblend in my experience has also been bad. It'll find a tiny path to leak through that mineral oil would never come close to finding. I hate to say it but I think I've had better luck with meticulously installing rope seals .
