54 Mercury Front end steering question
This photo shows the steering arm that attaches to the LF brake/backing plate assembly. Is it held on with just the nut and cotter pin? Or is it pressed on and hard to get off. Looking to glass bead it and repaint it.

Re: 54 Mercury Front end steering question
You mean where it is attached to the tie rod end? You use the same puller you used on the drag link end.

Re: 54 Mercury Front end steering question
I simply unbolted the arm from the backing plate. So I need to use a puller to remove the arm from the tierod end???

Yes. Remove the castle nut and use the puller.

1. Borrow a tie rod tool from your local chain auto parts store: O’Reilly’s, Autozone, Advance Auto 2. Use two good size ball peen hammers, use one to backup the steering arm eye and the other to smack it really hard. I have never been successful with this technique, probably didn’t hit it hard enough. 3. Use a pickle fork. These work, but there is usually some damage to the tie rod end or seal. I would only use the fork if I was planning to replace the tie rod end. Good luck with your project. |
