Default 8BA upper carb gasket wet/won’t run without choke

Chasing down issue on newly rebuilt 8BA
Won’t idle without choke, upper carb gasket wet with fuel
Have to set idle screw almost all the way open to get idle with choke open

Previous owner did rebuild/never could get engine running properly

What sort of carb do you have on it?

Something is wrong in your idle circuit. I suggest taking the carburetor apart again and verifying all the little passages are open. Compressed air and tiny soft brass wires (a single strand from a multi-strand wire) are your friends for cleaning passages.

the upper gsk showing signs of wetness is somewhat normal if it’s dripping fuel then there’s a float problem or needle and seat but either way it needs to come apart like 38 coupe suggested good luck

Carb is a model 8BA

I’ve never torn down/cleaned/rebuilt a carb and am hesitant to screw things up

Complicating matters is that I’m unsure timing is correct. When I set timing just BTDC, car backfires and is difficult to start.
I’m in search of ground zero!

Remember, The "dot" on the front pulley is already at 4 degrees BTDC. Set it right on the dot, not before it.

The Carb has three idle adjustments. One for RPM and two are for the fuel air mixture adjustment. These three only effect idle. Suggest you leave both of the mixture adjustments about 7/8 of one turn out. The engine should idle with this setting unless the RPM setting is too low. This setting can be fine tuned later.

PROBLEM SOLVED!!
It was a carburetor issue.
1). Vacuum advance fitting was leaking at carb (engine smoothed out when spraying carb cleaner at that fitting). Reinstalled fitting correctly.
2). Noticed passenger side idle screw setting made no difference, including removing it completely. Blew out opening and sprayed carb cleaner…

Engine now runs great!!! It has never run this well in all the time I’ve owned it.

Thank you to all who helped out!!!
