Re: Front spring question.
Guess there are 2 way; heat and bend the ears up (but you might change the temper of the steel leafs by time they are hot enough to bend) or cut and remove then replace with the style that uses thru bolt under leafs. Or just try prying them up.

Re: Front spring question.
hammaer and chisel , polish the leafs . Polish all the foot prints and polish the toe up so it does bind later.
Paint grease ,reassemble with clamp after you bolt the main back on your pearch . New bushing in all.

Re: Front spring question.
They should measure 31 1/2" center of eye to center of eye.
If they are a lot more than that I would be tempted not to use them |

Re: Front spring question.
The springs have now been cleaned up, is it best to assemble them exactly the same order they came apart.

Re: Front spring question.
If your planning on using your car as a driver and want it to be safe handling. Spend the money and buy a new spring. $130.00 to $220.00, depending on quality.
That spring has been on a car with weight on it for 90 years. It’s rusted badly, and you know what, it could break once you start driving. There are some things that sanding and a coat of paint will not make like new. Springs are very important. It’s time has come, replace it. One less thing to worry about. Enjoy. |

Re: Front spring question.
I agree with the 're-use' statements.
Especially, if is doesn't have any broken leafs and still measures 31", as you state. Heck, if that were my spring, I would have started out with a much better one than was original to my '30 roadster....and it is still on the car and doing fine after some attn. Also , if mine, and if you wanted to buy it....you'd have to pay extra for the 'patina' that has developed there over 80 years ! |

Re: Front spring question.
Great, after all the cleaning of the springs using a small angle grinder I've now got 'Popeye elbow'

Re: Front spring question.
Those clamps you have holding your leafs together are not original style. The originals were C shaped, fitted over the top of the leaf, and with the legs extending past the bottom. The legs have holes in them, and bolt goes across the bottom.
