I used a later 12 V generator and bored the locating hole on a late flathead...d32

OLDSKOOL; I think you are correct about swaping out the fields.

I just did the conversion last month. I bought the fields from Patrick's. The lady who did the order said it was a very simple change. She said "if I can do it anyone can". She was a lot of help discussing everything I would need in-order to change from 6vt to 12vt. I decided to have a local shop do the generator. I wanted to make sure the it was in good shape. They cut my armature, replaced a bearing and painted the case for $44.00. Patrick's charged $65.00 for the fields but I also bought runtzs, coil and headlight relay.

A 1956--early '60's generator will swap directly. You can drill the hole mentioned for the pin on bracket or remove the pin and just place the thing carefully. For appearance you need to cut off the '56 mounting tabs, but they don't interfere with anything.
