Hinge pins....
If you're gonna be doing body work and painting and all that, is it kosher to use a little heat on the top of the hinge to make it easier to drive the pins out? Maybe do some MIG on the top of the pin to free it up?? Thanks in advance for any comments!

Re: Hinge pins....
For simple this has become a pain in the ass project. What I found is to grind the cap off the pin, so you have nice flush surface. Center punch the top of the pin. Drill the pin with a 1/4 drill bit, preferably a long than standard bit 6-8 long. This keeps the drill chuck from cutting into the body. Drill down about a 1/2" this will relieve the pressure on serrated part of the pin. Penetrating oil and drive the pin down. This work great for me. LOL. Gordon

Re: Hinge pins....
I made a pin pusher that worked really good. I used it on my Model A doors and popped the old pins right out with no sweat. if I can find it and if it will work on your hings Ill send it out to ya.

Just a few taps with the gun and it'll come right out. Piece of cake. |

Re: Hinge pins....
Well, I got the door off today. ('32 tudor) I was amazed how soft the pins are! I wound up using an air chisel with a flat point, PB Blaster, heat (lots) and a drill. One of the problems was that the pin rotates with the door and develops a wear pattern where it passes through the body portion of the hinge. Sometimes, I was able to move the pin about 3/8" and have it hang up where the step on the OD would hang up going into the next portion. Driving with either the air chisel or hammer and punch seemed to be upsetting the pin like a rivet making it a tighter fit in the hole. AARGGHHH!! Now, I have to figure out rebuilding the bottom of the door.
