Ken Just to let you know I have a new Zephyr U joint in my 39 Zephyr trans and originally I was going to install a Ford U joint to find out it will not work on the Zephyr splines as it is smaller and doesn't go on. The Zephyr spline comming out of the transmission is different than the Ford I was hoping to change it for the Ford style because there are more of them than the Zephyr and cheaper. Frenchy |

The U joint I used was on the back of a '46 Ford transmission that I got several years ago, it fit with no problems. The Ford & Lincoln part #'s are the same, B-7090 for the U Joint Assembly.

Everything but the case is the same in the '39 Ford & '39 LZ transmission as far as part #'s go. I used all Ford parts; it pays to cross reference part #'s as a lot of Ford & Merc parts are used on the LZ.

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend and remembered those that gave their lives to protect our freedom... I got nothing done as far as working on Flatheads goes (still haven't put the plug wire looms in) but I've been enjoying driving the LZ with all the other new parts installed. I’m going to pull the distributor to clean/service it and install the new gasket set. Here’s a question, do any of you know if the terminal plates have corresponding numbers (relating to which plug wire goes where) on them?

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
According to the verbiage in the manual they are marked like the V8 caps. The following was pulled from the section on the V12.
ASSEMBLY. Note the numbers on the wire ends. Insert the wires in their proper positions in the distributor caps and conduit, and connect the other end of the wires to the corresponding numbers in the
terminal plate. |

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Thanks, I thought it would be like the V8's but I wasn't sure, I appreciate the information.

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Today I finally got a chance to mess with the LZ so I installed the plug wire looms, pulled the distributor, cleaned it up, put new gaskets, etc. Later this week I'll try to get the distributor installed and fired up.

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Steve, thanks, once everything is cleaned up and painted she should look fine... right now I just want her to run so I can have some fun with her while I wait for the floor pans from Bradley’s... Hoping to play again this Saturday, think you can cruise up? Vic

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Ken, I experienced my first screw up ever... LOL! I thought that the LZ marked the plugs like the Ford... Wrong... I had to retrace each plug wire as the LZ has odd numbers on left head and even numbers on the right head... Take away… If all else fails, read the instructions…

Reading the instructions is NOT in the instructions - or is it? I never read them .... until I'm in deep trouble - LOL!

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
This morning I cleaned up and inspected the distributor & coil, installed new gaskets, etc. Everything was working fine before I took it out of the LZ so I didn't want to disassemble everything to give it a super cleaning.

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Yup, I put everything back together and fired her up only to find that I must have crossed plug wires (maybe on #6 & #9) like Ken said. Oh well, looks like I'll have to pull everything out and try it again... I'll just keep repeating "I love my flatheads"...

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Well, things are back to normal here at the garage...
Mike, Don, Steve and Cliff came over this morning and we fixed the crossed plug wires in the LZ... Now she's running like she should... Steve and I changed the oil in the '39 CS before the other guys got to the garage and after we fixed the LZ we put Don's '37 on the lift to give it a grease job. After we finished with Don's car we all climbed into the Zephyr and went for (you guessed it) PIZZA... Life is good once more, now it's time to take the LZ for a nice drive.

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
I'll bet you're happy things are back to normal. The pickups and Don's '37 are looking good. Good enough to come north for a tour in August!!
