Default 1940 clock questions

How does the winding of a 1940 non-electric clock work; i.e. like a watch, twisting the stem back and forth, or one direction only. My clock will only twist one way unless the stem is pulled out to change the time. Thank you.

All of mine twist back and forth ratchet like. (I do have a 40 New Haven electric clock but I am afraid to hook it up to 6v even though it appears new.)

mine must not work. Twisting the stem does not produce an advancement of the hands.Thanks for the wisdom.

It may be fully wound and that's why your not able to turn the knob.

The clock is most probably fully wound and the convolutions of the main spring are jammed tight against each other. If the spring lubricant (a grease) is old and sticky the spring won't release its stored power and therefore no tick and impossible to wind up further.
The winding knob in this case will only wind backwards with the ratchet...a useless motion.

deuce;
Wow! an electric clock. I understand that is just about the rarest and hardest
1940 Ford item to find.

Yeah, the guy I got if from was a 41 guy and thought he would put it in his 41. It looks pretty much identical on the outside of the glove box door but the inside retainer is different and the back side of the clock is round where the normal one is rectangular. A 40 Merc clock is electric and the back of it looks similar.
I think I read somewhere that the dealer had to write a letter to the Newhaven clock company to request one. If you PM me with your em address I can send you some pictures of it. I will also add them to my 40 wagon public album.

Gearheadbill, if you take the clock to any good clock repair shop they can clean it with ultrasound and re lube it and it will probably work fine. My late brother graduated from the clock and watch repair school at North Seattle Community College and had his own shop for years, and did that to all my regular wind clocks. The inside looks very much like an old Big Ben alarm clock.

I got an NOS clock for my '40 about 25 years ago at Carlisle....was $90 and still works OK. Winds like a watch.
