If it were me, I would pull the studs and start cleaning the deck and the heads, and let the block/heads show me any issues, that may be currently hidden by the crud.

If you have the time it's one thing as no one would realize how much time you took to do it all.
We utilize thermal cleaning as takes 1 hour to clean it inside and out.
Thermal cleaning removes the sediment in water jackets. Engines that came in with chronic overheating issues are resolved by this process.

For people wanting to have their engines rebuilt I would recommend they find a shop in their area that have these "thermal cleaning machines".

Agreed 100% about the overheating. I was shocked how much crud was in the water jacket. It was a thermal barrier between the cylinder wall and the water trying to cool it. The rear part of my block was so packed with crud, I could drive a long screwdriver into it like a nail into wood.
