Default crankshaft rope seal question

I am in the process of rebuilding a stock model a engine. While taking it apart I found a rope seal on the rear main and the block. Can anybody tell me some info on this, where to buy replacement rope, how long does this last, anything to installing it? thanks for the info, steve

on some i have seen it as a desperate attempt at stopping a leak, no other modifications, others the slinger has been cut off and other modifications.
It’s best if you can post pictures of what you have.

Model A engines don't use a "rope seal" just a slinger.
I have enclosed pictures of the crank and rear main so you can see what stock Model A should look like.

You could try the rope seal that is used in the front. Maybe more than two pieces. The modern rope seals are Teflon impregnated so they last longer. You may have to cut down the size of the front seals. You can also buy lip seals that are in two pieces. Try the ones that are used on small block Chevy V8's.

I've used seals from older cars, flathead V8's, Chevy 6's, etc. You could also get some graphite rope as used by plumbers. You may have to put a piece of small copper tubing to support it.

The surface finish on the slinger of a stock Model A crankshaft is rough and similar to the surface finish on a smooth concrete sidewalk.

Any packing will work until it is abraded away.

A better solution is to create a smooth surface on the crankshaft so the packing is not abraded.

Other solutions include the use of radial lip seals that are used on modern engines.
