amount of paint on 35 pickup
I'm sure there are answers to the question of how much paint you need on the Forum, but haven't found it yet. Could someone give me an idea of what amount of paint we should have mixed for a 35 Pickup. Doing the truck in Dearborn Blue with black fenders & running boards. Taken down to bare metal and also doing the engine compartment, interior of cab & body.
Will most likely use sgl stage urethane PPG/Ditzler. Thanks for any help you can provide. |

Re: amount of paint on 35 pickup
Depends on what system you are using, because a quart of paint may turn into two or three quarts of sprayable material.
I have a "gallon" of paint, which really only has three quarts in the can. By the time I add 1 quart of activator I will have a full gallon ready to spray. I would guess a quart for the cab, a quart for the bed and engine compartment. Probably 1 quart for the fenders, but maybe two. |

Re: amount of paint on 35 pickup
Im doing a 39; all parts inside and out. Using PPG ESSS single stage. I haven't started on the bed yet and have used about 2 gallons (mixed). I probably used an extra 2 quarts because I didn't like the way an early coat turned out.

Re: amount of paint on 35 pickup
Consider that you will need 4 coats. I would buy a gallon of color and a gallon of black. Consider this paint as it will save you $$$ http://www.tcpglobal.com/restoration...chsheet_au.pdf
I've used both ppg(1 car) and Restoration Shop(2 cars). IMHO the several hundred dollars difference in the cost of paint isn't justified. I've also use Southern Polyurethane primer to good effect. IMHO the at least $1,000+ for using all ppg isn't necessary. Good to hear you are considering single stage. I finally figured out the practical difference between it and base/clear. With single stage to fix a scratch you can simply dab on the paint, sand and buff. With base/clear you have to re-apply clear on the whole panel. |

Re: amount of paint on 35 pickup
Follow Gordon's advice... He is already painting, I am still getting ready to paint.
I HOPE a gallon is enough. Painted a 65 Mustang with a gallon and had some leftover. This 36 pickup isn't too much different in size. My saving grace is I'm using a factory pack color so matching should not be hard, and I'm using white which blends easy, unlike a red or a metallic. |

Re: amount of paint on 35 pickup
I used a tri-coat on my coupe, this was the first car I ever painted, screwed up a lot! most every panel was sprayed 3 times from mistakes. It took every bit of 2 gallons.
I don't think you have to worry about modeling with single stage like I did, just runs. I would start with 1 gallon, and save the inside cab area for last.

Re: amount of paint on 35 pickup
Hate to say it, but I love the way it looks just as is. I would fix it up mechanically and just drive it!

Re: amount of paint on 35 pickup
I used about 3 1/2 gal. on my '39 pickup. I painted inside the cab, doors, door trim panels, inside and bottom of bed both sides of fenders, hood and grille as well as everything on the outside. I stayed with one color for everything and used catalyst in the Nason paint. Sprayead 3 coats on undersides and 4 coats on out side. Only the running boards were painted black.

Re: amount of paint on 35 pickup
Whatever you do, if you use more than one gallon of the same color paint, mix them both together before you do any painting. No two batches will match, even if mixed by machine. Don't ask me how I know. Also, tell them you want them to write the formula down just in case you have to have some more mixed in the future.
