Timing A and B Models
Are A and B models static timed the same ? On the B does the pinset give you the increased advance the B requires . Read the instructions and timed B but getting bad back firing .

Re: Timing A and B Models
The b timing hole is totally different. You cannot use the same for the A at all. I believe tic with a B is 9 degrees advanced already. You need to have a totally new hole drilled.

Re: Timing A and B Models
The procedure is the same but you must make sure that if you are timing a Model B you must use the Model B Timing cover as the timing pin hole is in a different position.
Check out this site for details on identifying the Model B timing cover. http://www.fordgarage.com/pages/timingcovers.htm trust this helps. Runner

Re: Timing A and B Models
Model B Ignition Distributor Timing:
The Model A service timing cover (A-6019-BR with the timing pin hole at the bottom of the elongated boss) is not really compatible for use with the Model B distributor even though it physically resembles a Model B timing cover casting. Proper initial ignition timing of a Model B distributor will not be achieved when timed "by the book" and using the wrong timing cover. The Model B distributor is intended to be timed only using the Model B timing cover (B-6019, which has the timing pin hole location advanced 9-1/2 camshaft degrees). Improper (Model A) timing cover usage with a Model B distributor results in retarded spark timing and loss of power and reduced top speed.

Re: Timing A and B Models
I may not have been clear in my question on the B model Timing . I have timed my A models with the pin with no problems . A friend asked me to help him with his B Model which has been backfiring . I used the pin to time his ignition in the same manner i have used on my A s . I have driven this B model several years ago so I doubted the timing was the problem but I tried . Big backfire out muffler . Car has not been run for several years . I wonder if an exhaust valve could be standing open and allowing raw fuel into muffler ?????

Re: Timing A and B Models
Put a can of Sea Foam in the gas, and another can in the oil. This will be a big help if he has sticky valves. The crap gas with ethanol is famous for making valves stick, especially when the gas is over a month old and the car sets for months.
Also check the spark for a hot blue spark 1/4" or more, as a weak spark will give lots of backfires. |
