Default Filling gas lights

I am a bit stumped and hope some of you can shed some light on my problem...get the pun? Yeah, it was horrible.
We ran around the neighborhood with the cowl lanterns lit last night, and the neighbors really liked it. One guy asked how to fill them, and I didn't know. After taking off the pot, I REALLY don't know. I tried pulling on what looked like an inner sleeve with some needle nose pliers (pictured), but it didn't budge. The brass part also looks unmovable, and I didn't screw with that because I suspect it's fairly fragile. So, how do these things get refilled?

The wick mechanism should just lift up and out.

Thanks for the pictures. The brass part does indeed just wedge into the body. It came out with no drama. Also, I misspoke when I called them gas lights. I am aware they burn kerosene.

The common side lamps use a cam like twist / turn fitting.

For me, I place a bit of cotton waste in the bottom of the font, fill with typical outdoor torch oil, it will burn more smokeless, and smell better than using Kerosene, Then re-fit the burner with its mantle wick lying on the cotton waste, it will wick up the oil, the cotton waste will keep the clear torch oil from sloshing. Trim the wick square, and roll the knob up to light the wick, then roll it down lower for the flame to be even, and not too high.
