Default Uuniversal Joint Lube.

For those of you who's Fords still use the torque tube and enclosed universal joint, is there a special lubrication you use to lube the joint itself? Thanks.

I used John Deere cornhead grease & removed speedometer gear & worked very well. (I learned this from the Barners) Thank you.
Gary.

Many deeply rooted opinions on this subject - do a forum search & you will see . I personally use straight 140 in the steering , tranny , u-joint cavity & the rear end . Dunno what year you're working on but on 33-34 's just pour four ounces in through the speedo hole & make sure your tranny stays full . The rear bearing in your tranny lets enough by to make up for the little bit lost through the wiping of the bell cork - felt - o-ring that you are using . If going this way the driveshaft seal & the gaskets on the bell are important . The # 1 cause of leaks using fluid here is overfilling . This is assuming the seal & gaskets are doing the job . Take a good look at how this stuff is & you will see that you only need 4 ounces in there . Many use cornhead grease with good results but that is a urea based product . The 00 viscosity slime { it pours sorta } that Ed Solari talked about is available for $7.99 @ qt at your John Deere dealer . Farm oyl instead of chevron but you don't need to buy 5 gallons and it is lithium based . From what I've been able to find out about " cylinder oil - soda soap grease " this stuff is in the ball park on the slime-o-meter . Your call on this but the packed in chassis grease thing has been known to destroy all . All meaning the u-joint , driveshaft & bearing and the speedo gear stuff . Seen this with me own 2 eyes . The thick chassis grease was all stuck to the outside wall and the stuff that needed lube was starved and you know the end result .

One last clarification on this point. The John Deere is viscosity of 0 made from urea base. The chevron multifak EP 00 has viscosity of 00 with lithium base. EP 00 will run downward by gravity and refresh from the total in the U joint bell at idle. The John Deere will only becomes fluid when in dirrect contact with spinding shaft so my concern some material in the bell may never flow down to refresh the portion actually used to lub. Also a thinner viscosity has a better chance to work into U joint and roller bearing area. The chevron is only in 5 gallon tubs... the fluid gear grease in the other post I THINK also viscosity of 00 but in smaller size bottle. Of course even thinner grease may be better but then you have a issue of it leaking out of the felt seal on the bell housing.
