Title? Requirements
Was wondering before I go for take off, what are the requirements for a hot rod title? I mean what mess do ya have to go through? I heard it is a mess of legal issues and fees to get one. What year would the title be for? I dont want a modern title but an antique title that the numbers are back in the 40's. I'm gonna go with Grundy insurance.

Re: Title? Requirements
As stated check your state. The numbers haven't changed since the 40's They are still the same 1 thru 0.

Re: Title? Requirements
Find out what you can do in state with out a title. Best to know what is involved before you buy. Staying in state is usually easier as buyer and seller were subject to same rules. Specifically find out when the state started requiring titles and what the process is for a car older than that. If you are in a rural area.... Walk into a local registry office when it isnt busy and ask. Remember who you asked. You can get a lot more done rurally than you can in a busy office. If they have had the car for 50 years get a motorized bill of sale stating that.

Re: Title? Requirements
A word or two of caution..
Don't volunteer to much info.. If a question is asked about the year of the engine, if the engine is an original style flat head Ford V8 there most likely will be no problem, however, if the engine is a late model OHV, just say the engine is a '63-65, don't let your ego get in the way spewing out that the engine is a '95 LS?. Many states are getting very touchy about emissions, even on old cars.. A friend of mine built a '37 Ford 4dr slant back a few years ago. When he took the car into the DMV to license and title it, he told the clerk that the engine was a '95.. The response.. Where are the CATS, oxy sensors, etc.. My friend had to put all of the emission equipment for a '95 on the car. The state titled it as a special built '95, now it has to be smoged every two years..

Re: Title? Requirements
Easiest way is to buy a vehicle with a title. It is getting real hard in most states to get titles for cars.
Best bet is to ask your local DMV or Sec of state or whatever they call it where you live. 6 months ago I picked up a truck cab to use as a start to a project. I got a bill of sale with it. Went to the local Sec. of State office( Which I have dealt with for years) and tryed to apply for a title. This is what I was told. I couldn't apply for a title. The guy that I bought it from should have. He shouldn't have sold it to me with just a bill of sale as how could he prove that he owned it. Coudn't go thru the bonding process as the cab was to close to my house and considered a local sale. Blah,blah,blah..... The final word was that due to the amount of stolen and then scrapped cars(especialy in my county) the state has made it dam near impossible to get a title. Just to make sure that they were on the level I had a friend check with another office else where and he gott he same story. Torchie. Last edited by Torchie; 04-04-2013 at 04:31 PM. |

Re: Title? Requirements
Remember all you have to do is satisfy the bare minimum of the requirements and the less info you give them past that the better. Rod

Re: Title? Requirements
In NC if the vehicle is over 25 years old and it is from out of state, OR if you just need a title for a in state vehicle you are buying when it is ready to be driven it must be inspected. If it passes you get a title.
In my case that is when DMV found the title I got with my truck from Kentucky did not match the number on the frame. Because of this I was required to get an appraisal on car dealer letterhead. Then I had to purchase a three year bond payable to the state of North Carolina for 1 1/2 times the appraised value. After that I still waited over six months for the DMV to process everything. After all this aggravation I finally got a clear title. GOOD LUCK
