Default 81 carb for Flathead.

Is the 81 easy to tune and what does it look like? I have experience with the 8n ford carbs and Carter WO on my Willys jeep. If it's anything like the Carter, there should only be a fuel and air screw. and if that's the case if I find two it should be a piece of cake to tune them once I find the engine and have time to rebuild it.

An 81 looks like a 48 and both look like a 97. 81's are rare and therefore expensive. I recommend you set aside a lot of time using "search" here and the HAMB to learn about these Strombergs, if that is what you want. Uncle Max is a great resource if and when you decide to find and/or rebuild these.

The 81 is a reference to the Stromberg line with the more famous 97 leading the charge. The 97, 48, and 81 have very similar tuning characteristics.

Their more of a midget 97 than a 48.Look just like my avatar.Same size phisically but smaller internals. I have a couple of them all rebuilt w/USA stuff,no China parts used. ken ct.

Ford used them on the little 60 HP motors . If You use one on a larger motor you may get into the old deal that it is too small and you have to run it with much more throttle opening to maintain and economy could be poor . Never done this but I do know if you run too small of a carb on big newer motors you run hard economy is NOT GOOD !!!!!

What you really need are three 81's with direct linkage.
Incredible throttle response.
