It looks to be in remarkable condition. I don't know what the regulations are in Pennsylvania, but you should check to see if you can repaint the numbers/letters. Some states say that you cannot alter or restore a license plate. With your DMV permission, you could just install the plate on your '30 Model A.

I like it Mitch. It's kind of a unique letter and number combo. Restore the paint and your good to go.
I recently talked to a notary about the old purple plates they no longer make and the YOM plates. She said if an old plate number had not been registered for a few years, PENNDOT can re-issue that number on a new plate. If that happens, it kills the old plate.
I like the purple plates and wish they would bring them back.

Looking at Pa's website that plate is okay to use registration wise, not sure about the paint condition though.

I was told the plates must be in restored original condition. So perfect. I have a matched front and rear pair for my Model A but the number was reused so they are useless.

here in PA we can restore our plates for use or they must be legible for unrestored...

i thought this plate was cool not only because of the 123 but the MA which can stand for Model A or Mitch's Auto

the numbers were clear to use in the data base so i went for it and then sent it to tagdr.com for restoration...
i think it's a good fit for Lucy

So you need just one plate in PA.? In California you need 2 plates. That make it more difficult to get YOM plates.

Vermin has beautifully restored '29 California plates, Black, with Yellow letters, 14" long & with square corners. Cost me 2 arms & a leg, to purchase 3 plain chrome frames for them!!!
Often wondered, if I ran current plates on a Model A & painted them Black/Yellow, would JOHN LAW notice??????

What color combo is correct for Pennsylvania plates. I've seen some like the one Mitch has, but I also seen some with blue background with yellow letter/numbers. Why are they different?

Pa alternated colors blue and yellow each year starting in 1923 with 23 being blue with yellow numbers.

Your plate looks great, Thanks for letting us know who restored it. I have a 1930 coupe and a 1930 rpu, I was able to get 2 1930 Pa. plates with all the numbers the same except the last one, one ends in 6 and the other 7, hope they come out as nice as yours..

Here is the Washington 1931 YOM plate I have on my 1931 160B, I have had the plate since 1970, when my wife bought a box of plates at a garage sale for $15 and thought I would be upset because she spent too much!!

As I recall the box had plates from 1928 through the 40s, all matching sets!!!

this plate has been restored and I like it because it has 3 31's on it

I bought a set of restored California plates about 6 years ago, and was very happy with how they turned out. The man I bought them from was in N. California, and guaranteed the numbers being good at the DMV for something like 2 months.

Terry,
thats a nice plate
is your A registered as an antique as i see you have to display registration stickers, so i assume there is a yearly registration fee.
here in PA they are considered permanent requiring no yearly fees, once and done.

That's the first time I've seen a plate with the reinforcing rib stamped the opposite direction from the numbers. At first glance it looks like the plate was installed backwards.

I noticed a lot of the old plates, including several I own, have very small holes punched in all four corners (in addition to the four oblong holes usually used for mounting). What is the purpose of the small holes? I am guessing that they are also for mounting (?). Are those for mounting too?

Im guessing the small outer holes are for foreign cars which had their license plate holes farther out. At least some of the oddball cars I have worked on were that way.

Mitch, to answer your question, no it is not registered as an "antique". I believe if you do, there are restrictions on how much you can drive or use your car.......seems like I remember hearing that years ago. It is registered normally, but with YOM plates.

All all a bit different here in the UK, when I imported my Sport Coupe I had a few options, buy a number from the marketplace, buy a number from the Driver and Vehicle Licencing Agency, (DVLA), Most of our numbers are transferable so as you can imagine the right combinations of numbers and letters go for a very high price. I decided to take a flyer on a YOM plate that would be issued FOC by the DVLA. I ended up with BF6922 which was part of a batch I believe was originally issued in 1929 for Staffordshire, as our plates are/were regional. I live in Berkshire but I think it's a pretty cool number

Want one custom made? You pick the state, the year and the number:

http://www.licenseplates.tv/index.ph...que_collectors

JOHN LAW might not notice, but wouldn't care if the plate was used in an off road show setting.

CA has Historical Vehicle Plates. More expensive than YOM.

Since we never got a definitive answer on the reason some tags have little holes in them i asked Rod at tagdr.com so here is what he said::::

"Lots of others states had those same holes.
They were used to set the plate on little pegs when the plate was struck with the serial number. Basically to keep it in place on the table when striking".

Sacramento Vintage Ford---They're 14" long, with square corners. Some 14" plates had rounded corners. 1934 Ca plates had rounded corners.

Here is Darryl's web site: http://www.darrylsplates.com/ He came highly recommended by a guy in my club chapter.

His work is very good, but I have seen complaints about the time he takes. He has had mine about 6 months. He asked for payment in October.

i did a search and found lots of issues with his turnaround time.. no matter how good the work is what good is it if it takes years to get done. thats one guy to stay away from.. i like things handled in a reasonable amount of time unless notified in advance about it. to pay for it in full is nuts, Rod at tag dr didnt request payment till it was ready for shipment back..as mentioned this is my third go around and each time has been pleasant and quick. when i find a good guy on a service i will stick with him and tell others. thats the best form of advertisement.

There is an alternative to YOM plates is some states. I have a pair of 1927 Colorado plates that were painted to match the car. Since it was registered in 1999 with a bonded title, I'm unable to get YOM plates. However, I was able to get personalized plates matching the '27 numbers. Never any issues with the law. The '29 plates are un-restored originals and designated as truck plates.

Mitch,

In hindsight, I wish I had had the foresight. I went off of the recommendation of a respected member of our local club without checking on FB. Not much I can do now. When they called and wanted my cc number, I assumed that the plates would be shipped soon. When they didn't show up, I called. It was then that I read some comments on line. Caveat emptor!
