Default Odometer Spool Disassembly Question

I removed the speedo from my 39 pu because it was making noise. The odometer and tripmeter were inoperative also. I have cleaned all the hardened grease and lubed the gear-train. What I have found is it appears the 100s and 1000s wheel on the odometer spool are stuck.

It looks to me like the tab washer on the end should slide off but its on there quite firmly and I can't tell if its stuck or I am mistaken.

Anyone know how the spool is disassembled?

I know I can send it out but I want to do it myself

On the Stewart Warners, I remove the washers from the side opposite the drive gear. All of the washers & rails are keyed to the shaft and they are close tolerance fit. Look closely on the shaft and see if there are any marks that might have been crimped in there to keep things from moving. If there is, the shaft will have to be massaged back to the original diameter in the affected area for the parts & wheels to come off the shaft without damage. If you are lucky, you can just carefully slide them off.

The paint on the wheels can easily flake off on the old wheels so take as much care as you can to preserve them. The paint flakes can jam the gears. It doesn't take much crud in there to jam them up. They look to be in pretty good shape. Some folks just put the whole assembly in an ultrasonic cleaner to get all the crud out of the gear slot on each wheel and the tiny gears. After cleaning & drying, the assembly is dipped in light oil & left to drip dry. It can be carefully wiped and reintalled after testing. It just depends on how solid the wheel paint is as to how hard you can work these parts. New decal strips are available to restore the wheels if necessary.

Interesting, yours is slightly different than my SW wheel. Mine has the washer with the tang on the left side and a groove that a keeper spring uses to hold it into the case. The washer on the left was not keyed to the shaft. Anyway, they should pull apart the same way. Follow rotorwrench's instructions and you should be good. Remember how the numbers line up with the washer tang as that's what locates the numbers in the speedo face window.
