Coil
I am on a long trip and my coil has started to leak. I am near Salt Lake City where there are lots of parts houses. Anyone have a current number for a 6 volt pos ground coil that i could pick up at Napa or one of the fly by nights? I think I will go with a Petronix when I can get one but need to keep going for now. Thanks.

Re: Coil
NAPA lists this as a 6v on their web site:
Part Number: IC7SB Product Line: Mileage Plus Electrical IMPORTANT INFO: w/o External Resistor;6 Volt

Re: Coil
If the coil is oil filled it should be mounted with the tower up.

Re: Coil
Suggestion:
1. That you take the coil wire to the store and check the fit in the new coil. I tried two from parts stores and wire kept falling from coil. I found boot from my old SBC HEI dist that held wire until I got a coil from Berts. Seems Model A wire is 7MM and newer are 8mm. Even with terminal on wire it was too small. Maybe tooth picks would hold wire? 2. Also both stores did not stock copper wires ... Only carbon wire. Not sure how well carbon works with Model A ignition. Of course the 8MM wire does not fit in Model A dist ... Go figure!! Last edited by Benson; 06-24-2015 at 12:24 PM. |

Re: Coil
If the coil is still working then just pointing the coil wire up will be fine. Oil coils don't like being tipped upside down, as mentioned.

Or would it just be a good practice to run all them up regardless of oil or not. Mines pointing down at this time, but I'm about to walk out there and turn it over for GP's.

Re: Coil
I'm still using original Model A coils. There's still a supply of good ones to be found at swap meets.

Re: Coil
I've never had a leak with oil filled coils.
Also, A 12 volt coil that needs an external resistor will work on 6 volts.

Re: Coil
I ask the same question. How do we tell if it is oil filled?

Re: Coil
I had a coil leaking on a 55 Chevy and found that the screw was loose in the coil tower. Do not over tighten.

Re: Coil
This is the one I use for a 6 volt system, it is resin filed and will not leak.
Pertronix 40111 - Pertronix Flame-Thrower Coil I bought mine from Amazon as they had the best price at the time. Some of the oil filled one will make a "splashing" sound when you shake them near your ear. Of course a resin filled one will never make the sound, however I can not state that all oil filled ones will make the noise.

Re: Coil
Page 31, figure 15 of the Model A owners handbook shows the coil face down.
I'm turning mine back down for the simple fact that it looks SO much better. You can download the handbook online for free.
