Usually just pry under one end to get it out of the groove, then another tool to get behind it.
What style of ends are on the retainers? Square? Enlarged w/a small hole? Tapered?
IIRC the originals had tapered ends w/the ends visible so it is easier to get a pointy pry tool behind the ring.
