Default Rear brake upgrades for around $500?

After dealing with getting drums off for a day I’m considering upgrading my brakes on the rear. I’m already doing disc up from with a dual master cylinder. I don’t think I need discs on the rear but are there any upgrades worth doing for around $500? I’m not sure how many times my homemade tool will be able to work pulling the stock drums off!

Why not buy a drum removal tool. Around a $175 is tops for, IMO, the best one made (Vintage Precision) BUT there are similar type pullers for less $$$$, you'd had your drums off in 5 minutes or less!!!

In terms of pullers, I agree with Rockfla. Vintage Precision's puller is tops and will remove the most stubborn drum for a cost of $175.00.

In regards to an upgrade. Yep, Boling Bros. rear drums. They "slip" over the studs like a modern drum. You can use any Ford or Lincoln-style hydraulic brake set up with these drums.

A couple whacks with a rubber mallet and they come off. Very worthy upgrade.

Krylon32 on here is a dealer for Boling Bros. and is offering members 10% off.

I am not opposed to the tool but here's my thinking. If I use stock brakes ill spend $500 or more on drums, bearings, wheel cylinders etc plus the $200 on the tool. I also am not sure my backing plates are reusable. Both have portions of brake cable stuck in them that im sure I can remove without too much effort but all this together got me thinking... At that point I could have upgraded brakes which leads me here and to my post before I buy parts!

Thank you. I will check it out. These use stock spindles/axle?

They go onto a '40 hub, so any banjo rear will do. You do need to remove the swedged lugs and use pressed-in knurled ones, but it an easy job for sure. Check out their site.

It says they fit either front or rear, but I don't see any provision for the parking/emergency brake linkage. You should check with Krylon32 to see what the similar setup would cost using Boling Bros. kits.

Heads-UP.... BE CAREFUL! Do yourself a couple of favors. First do some SERIOUS research when comparing Boling Brothers kits with the Speedway stuff. From the mouth of a Speedway technician, the backing plate assemblies from Speedway are supplied by Boling Brothers. SHOULD be comparable, good quality. Those pretty drums are a different story. Speedway's "Lincoln" drums are supplied from someplace far away. They have repeatedly come under scrutiny for being out of round, as well as out of balance. The BOLING Brothers drums are American made, and the quality is unmatched.

Second favor that you should do for yourself .... Contact Gary Musman who goes by "Krylon32" here on F'Barn. Gary runs "Cornhuskers" and is a dealer for Boling Brothers products and will give a 10% discount to any Ford Barn member. Gary has supplied many sets of Boling Brothers brakes to members here. I haven't heard one serious complaint yet.... period!

Coop

I did the change over on my '46 Coupe, and got the kits from Boling Brothers. Good quality parts, and at the time (three years ago) their prices were a bit better than Speedway. Also, if you plan to keep the car for a long time, the puller will be well worth the $$.

This is interesting. Speedway's loaded backing plates are $479 a PAIR. Boling Bros. loaded backing plate are $400 EACH.

If BB does supply Speedway with these, how are they selling them for so much less? Is the hardware and shoes on the Speedway stuff garbage?

Ive seen a lot of part price variation lately and I wonder if it’s just a symptom of prices changing so often right now that vendors selling stock they bought at low prices are still selling at old prices even if the actual manufacturer has raised their pricing. In my own business I have yet to raise prices as I am still using inventory from last year. Once I’m hit with new prices on new inventorY, I’ll raise appropriately

I've been selling quite a few Boling Brothers Lincoln rear brake loaded backing plates with 1.75 inch shoes to work with stock rear drums and hubs. They are a little pricey with a list price of 600.00 your cost from me 540.00 plus the ride. They work well.

Gary.... Since YOU are in the 'KNOW' on these Boling Brothers brakes, are these prices being quoted on EACH backing plate, or per PAIR of backing plates?

For instance, what would a PAIR of 2" FRONTS (backing plates) run from Bowling Brothers? How about a PAIR of 1.75" REARS (backing plates).......IF PURCHASED from Boling Bros.?

Thank You....Coop
